From 20 to 24 October 2025, the Climate-Smart Forestry Network seminar was held in the Netherlands, organized by Wageningen University & Research.

Researchers of LSFRI "Silava" participated in the Seminar: Didzis Elferts attended as part of the ForestBand project (No. EE-LV00188), while Laura Ķēniņa and Kristaps Makovskis participated within the framework of their postdoctoral research projects (No. 1.1.1.9/LZP/1/24/040 and No. 1.1.1.9/LZP/1/24/050) through international mobility.

The main goal of the Seminar was to introduce participants to forest management modeling using the EFISCEN-space model, provide hands-on training in its application, and promote knowledge exchange and collaboration in climate-smart forestry research. The program included presentations on current research, lectures by Wageningen University researchers, practical exercises with the EFISCEN-space model, and field visits to scientific forest sites. In total, 30 participants from 18 European research organizations and universities attended the seminar.

During the seminar, participants shared experiences and research results on topics such as the impact of drought on tree growth, risks posed by spruce eight-toothed bark beetles, and the latest forest management models predicting the effects of different practices on stand development, economic return, and sustainability. Researcher Laura Ķēniņa presented the report "Insights from Climate-Smart Forestry Research in Latvia", showcasing studies carried out at LSFRI "Silava" in the areas of forest selection and tree species adaptation.

Presentations and discussions highlighted regional differences in European forest management and explored potential solutions to help forests adapt to climate change and mitigate associated risks.
