Rural Support Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia agreement No. 25-00-S0INZ03-000026

The Study is financed in accordance with Cabinet of Ministers regulations No. 59 "Procedure for awarding state and European Union support for investment promotion in agriculture".

The aim of the study is to improve the accounting system for GHG emissions and carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in arable lands and permanent grasslands, especially organic and alluvial soils, ensuring its compliance with European Union and UN requirements.

Research tasks include empirical measurements of CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes in different land use and soil cultivation systems, assessment of the impact of a sown plant (red clover) on carbon cycling, spatial refinement of the distribution and use of organic soils, as well as quantification of soil heterotrophic respiration. The obtained data will be used to develop improved emission factors and activity datasets for LULUCF and the agricultural sector, integrating them into the national GHG inventory.

The main results will be refined emission factors for organic and alluvial soils, detailed maps of organic soils, recommendations for climate-friendly management of arable lands and grasslands, as well as scientific publications and a final report.
