The International Day of Forests is celebrated worldwide on 21 March, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 2012. Each year there is chosen a forest-related theme where to focus public attention. The theme for International Day of Forests 2024 is "Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World", to highlight the role and importance of innovation and technology in the development of the forest sector.
Understanding the necesarrity for developing new ideas, researches and technologies, Latvia has developed a number of world-class products in the forest sector.
Since 2023 LSFRI "Silava" has been conducting a research project Cord-forming basidiomycetes: possibilities of their use for the limiting root rot in spruce forests on peat soils. To assess the competitiveness of cordgrass-forming basidial fungi against pathogenic fungi, fungal isolates have been selected and cultured for laboratory experiments, and bitter ergot shows antagonism against root rot (Heterobasidion annosum), which causes root rot in conifers, both under laboratory conditions and in peat.
It is a pleasure to work and find new solutions for a better world!
